COMMON QUESTIONS:
Who can audition?

Girls and Boys 8-17 years old by September 1, 2007 - MUST currently study classical ballet and take a minimum of two (2), ninety-minute classes each week.

What are the audition procedures & schedule?

Dancers arrive no earlier than 2:00 and no later than 2:30. After we receive their registration form and fee, they will receive a number to be pinned on the front and back of their dance clothing. They may then ready themselves in the dressing rooms or warm-up in the "small studio" (labeled Holliday Studio). They should remain in these two areas until they are assembled for the audition. DO NOT enter the main studio (labeled Holvey Studio). The judges will be preparing for the audition and should not be disturbed!

The audition will begin at 3:00 and dancers will be admitted into the Holvey Studio in small groups for their introduction to the judges (groups formed by numerical order). Once all are admitted to the main studio, the audition will continue.

Participants DO NOT need to prepare dance variations and/or bring music. The CVYB uses a typical ballet class format for their audition. Upon the completion of the audition, dancers will be released to their parents/guardians. The audition is closed to all observers.

How long does the audition usually last?

The audition will vary slightly in length depending on to the number of applicants, but it usually takes approximately 2 hours.

What should I wear?

Girls:

black leotard (spaghetti strap preferred), pink tights, technique shoes, hair in classical bun with no bangs, no hair bows or scrunchies and NO jewelry or watches.

Boys:

white leotard or close fitting white T-shirt, black tights, technique shoes, hair well-groomed and off face and NO jewelry or watches.

What should parents and siblings do during the audition?

Parents are not permitted to observe the audition. Once the audition is underway, an information session led by the CVYB President is held in the adjoining studio. During this session, we will discuss the history of this 31-year-old ballet company and the expectations for its dancers and their families.

Since becoming a member of the CVYB is a wonderful opportunity but a very serious commitment of your time and effort, it is very important that you remain for this session We will provide a handbook that will describe our expectations for your dancer and answer any questions you may have. It is critical that you and your dancer understand the commitment that you may be called upon to make should this audition result in an invitation to join the CVYB.

Since the registration process is long and the information meeting a serious discussion time for adults, we ask that you DO NOT bring siblings and/or other small children to the studio during the audition.

How will the audition be judged?

At registration, each dancer will receive a number to pin on their dance clothing and will be known to judges only by that number. Dancers will be judged on their skill and technique and will accumulate points during each phase of the audition. These points will be added together for an overall score. Overall scores will be ranked in descending order (highest to lowest) and referenced by registration number. This will be the list from which Apprentice Positions in the Cuyahoga Valley Youth Ballet will be filled.

How will I find out whether I made the CVYB?

After 9:00 p.m. on the day of the audition, you may call the CVYB Information Line at (330) 996-1100. The names of the dancers who will be offered a contract with the CVYB will be listed.

If invited to become an Apprentice Dancer, the dancer will be sent a packet with information, the Apprentice Contract for the 2007-2008 season and other important documents. The contract and other forms must be signed and returned immediately.
